PAPATOETOE AFFAIRS.

WELFARE LEAGUE'S VIEWS. At a meeting of the Papatoctoe Welfare League last week matters of interest to the district discussed included sanitation, rate collection and road repairs. It was decided to 'bring the matter of legal expenses, incurred in regard to back rates, before the board, pointing out that in the 1 opinion of the league most of the work could bo done by the town clerk. The attention of the board was directed to the state of Kolmar Koad, and the league decided to ask that repairs be done before the wet weather sets in. The need of a light at the junction of Rangitoto and Armagh Roads was pointed out. The change in the system of groceries supply by the Hospital Board for relief purposes gave great satisfaction, and the secretarywas instructed to congratulate the Rev.i W. C. Wood, local representative on the' board, on the result. I A successful function followed the meet-| itig, when the president, Mr. G. G. Thompson. welcomed home Mr. W. Jeffs, who recently returned from a trip to Scotland. Mr. Thompson congratulated Mr. and Mrs. ( Jeffs on their courage in undertaking such a long journey. Mr. Jeffs, who is over 80 years of age, is a retired railway servant and is still hale and hearty, gave an interesting talk in reply, thanking the members on behalf of Mrs. Jeffs and him-' self. During his visit he had the pleasure of meeting many people in all ranks of life, including the Duke and Duchess of Kent, both ot whom he found quite homely people and very friendly. He recalled having met a person who asked him if the natives in New Zealand were still cannibals, and whether it was safe to go near them. Another, whom he advised to visit New Zealand, told him that as the bridge was now finished at Sydney, when he visited Australia he would go I over to Auckland.
