DOMAIN GAMES.
KEEN SECOND ROUND. PLAY UNDER GALE CONDITIONS TWO BOWLERS ON THE MARK. Though the heavy gale which swept the Domain cricket ground on Saturday was disconcerting, it did not appear to militate against good play at the beginning of the third series of matches in the City and Suburban Association's second round of the premiership. The atmospherics rather were invigorating, and, while some batsmen were troubled, that was due to the bowlers who were able cunningly to use the wind 011 the wicket or to profit from calculated miss-hits. In this respect it was a busy day for fieldsmen around the wickets, for there lay the danger point, as the crop of catches proved. The pitches were in capital order, showing resilience and evenness.
Mount Roskill made it a productive opportunity against Brixton and raised 300 runs. R. Watkins (93) topjied the score, and one of the features was his partnership with his brother, E. Watkins (54). The former revealed a range of good strokes, and he drove with power and indulged in some nice pulls to leg. He had hard luck in not making it three ligurcs. E. Watkins was more restrained, but it was a treat to see the running of the jjair between the wickets. Rinnner, with six boundaries in a row for his unbeaten 34, also showed a return to form. Green Lane put up an erratic performance to register 147 against R.V. Kerr (28) and Robinson (20) opened with sparkle, there was a drop, and then R. Lonergan (20), Crowhurst (36) and Morula u (18) batted resourcefully, for the "tail" to peter out under R.Y.'s trundling fire, headed by Finlayson. I'onsonby, with Hook (32), Viscoe (16) and Holiday (16), early rose to the occasion against Manukau, but except for brave stands by Shepherd (17) and quite an impressive exhibition by Young (24) the team wilted, and the total was 133 runs, largely restricted owing to the incisive bowling of Nelson Martin. The bowling of C. G. Finlayson (nine for 57) and Nelson Martin (nine for 04) was notable for length and accuracy in each case. While the former got six batsmen caught, and one lbw in his average, Martin clean-bowled five, had a lbw and one player stumped. Scores: — MOUNT ROSKILL V. BRIXTON. KOSKILL.—First Innings.
