VICTORY IN SYDNEY. EASILY BEAT WESTERN SUBURBS. (Received 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 8. The New Zealand junior tennis team defeated Western Suburbs juniors on Satur (lay bv seven rubbers to two. ■ The New Zealauders won all the singles, which were one-set matches, and" won one of the three two-set doubles, the other two doubles being indecisive. Results (New Zealanders named first) :— Singles.—N. F. Bedford beat N. Martin, 10—S ; a; D. Brown beat D. Pails, 6—4; It. G. Pattinson beat A. Jurd, o—4. Doubles.—Bedford and J. W. Gunn v. Martin and Pails, .7—5, 1—0; J. T. Maysou and Brown, v. K. Cornell and Jurd, o—B, 0—1; Pattinson and I. J. Coricli beat L. Cook and 1. Gillett,. G—4, G—-. DUNIOP SHIELD FINAL. ROTORUA BEATS WHAKATANE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, this day. Weather and other conditions were favourable for the final tennis match in the Bay of Plenty Association's competition for the Dunlop Shield, played on the Whakatane Club's courts yesterday between teams representing Kotorua Club (winners of eastern zone) and Whakatane (finalists for western zone). Considerable interest was displayed, in the event, there being a large gallery of spectators. Atliough many of the games were well contested, the visitors proved easy winners, annexing all the rubbers with the exception of one unfinished. FINALS AT STANLEY STREET. The finals between the grass court and hard court competition winners, to be decided by a series of matches on both types of court, were commenced on the Stanley Street grass courts on Saturday. Results :— Third Grade. —West End v. Royal Oak: Royal Oak is leading by five matches to four, eleven sets each, with one match unfinished. Fourth Grade.—West End v. Mount Albert: West End is leading by eight matches to two. D GRADE. ' • MOUNT ALBERT V. WEST END. (On Grass Court.)
West End won 0 matches to 1, with 3 unfinished. (Mount Albert names first.) Men's Singles.—Marshall beat Calvert, 6—5, 5—6, 6—4 ; Maxwell lost to Marrett, C—o, G—4. Ladies' Singles.—Miss Halliwell lost to Hiss Lindsay, 3—C, 6—l, 6 —2 ; Miss Brodie lost to Mrs. Knowling, G—2, 6—l. Men's Doubles.—Stevens and Miller lost to Cash and Haynes, 5—6, 6—4, 6—4. Ladies' Doubles.—Miss Halliwell and Miss Brodie lost to Miss Lindsay and Mrs. Knowling, 6—l, 6—l; Misses Coles and Pliillipson lost to Mesdnmes Gabites and Redwood, 6—4, 4—6, G—3. SECONDARY SCHOOLS. The secondary schools' tennis tournament was continued on Saturday, when games in the intermediate division resulted as follows Singles,—Semi-finals: Moller (Mount Albert) beat Thompson (Auckland Grammar), 6—1.6—1; Satchell (Northcoie D.H.) beat Coldham (Mount Albert), 6—l, 4 —6,, 6—-5. Doubles.—-Second round : Kitchingman and Satchell (Takapuna) beat Hall and Woonton (Technical), B—6. Third round: Aickin and Gould (Mount Albert) beat Thornton and Deans (Otahuhu), S—s: Moller and Coldham beat Doherty and Dudley (Otahuhu), S —i; Kitchingham and Satchell beat Lawrie and Smyth (Otahuhu), S—4. Minogue and Jackson (Takapuna) beat Aickin ' and Gould, 6—4, 6—l.
