BAND MUSIC IN AUCKLAND.
Every now and then someone wonders (in print) why Auckland lags behind in the matter of contesting bands. The answer was I to be found at Carlaw Park on Thursday night when 250,000 Aucklanders were invited to hear probably the best 'brass band in Australia and New Zealand, and perhaps 500 turned up. No, we are not a music-loving people, and although I have been interested in bands for nearly 40 years, I do not remember an Auckland band winning a major contest where there has been any opposition to speak of. Likewise the best symphony orchestras have always been in the South. Another reason is that when a boy gets a bit useful on a cornet or trombone he goes out doing a bit of dance band playing, earning a pound or two, and then lie is lost to amateur brass bands. It is 110 use blaming the Municipal Band; in fact we should bo thankful we have it, otherwise it would be impossible to hear decent band music in Auckland. FIRST VALVE.
