NATIONAL PARK.
FUTURE CONTROL QUESTION. MAINTENANCE OF ROADS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAWERA, this day. Developments of first importance to the future control and administration of Mount Egmont National Park have arisen as the result of recent deputations to the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple. The Minister telegraphed last night to Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, member for Egmont, that arrangements were heing made to legalise roade, and for the Main Highways Board to take over the roads as main highways. In • refei ence to the future maintenance of the roads, the Minister suggested that Mr. W ilkinson should convene a conference of the local bodies concerned to ascertain whether they would agree to contribute 25 per cent of the future cost of maintenance. "If they cannot or will not agree, the Government has the power, under the Public Works Act, to issue a warrant apportioning the cost between the Highways Board and local bodies," stated the Minister.
Toll gates on the road would, of course, require to be abolished. A grant of £100 is to be made for the repair of flood damage on the Dawson Falls Road. In conformity with the Minister's suggestion, the Loral Bodies Association will call the suggested conference at Eltham at an early date.
