SERVICE SUSPENDED.
BLUFF-MELBOURNE ROUTE.
RESUMPTION IN NOVEMBER,
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
INVERCARGILL, Friday.
The Union Steam Ship Company has decided not to extend the Bluff-Mel-bourne service for the winter months, and the service will be resumed in November.
In a letter to the Southland League the company states that, in spite of the fact that a large number of people journeyed between New Zealand and Australia by the Marama, the figures for the period from November 7 to February 10 showed a loss, without any provision for interest and depreciation. In the company's opinion, an additional round voyage would increase the loss. The company says it is doing its best to provide a passenger service which will give satisfaction in the South, but circumstances compel it to have due regard to the financial results.
