Buddhism can be traced back -to the teachings of Gautama, born in Bengal about 500 B.C. Four-fifths of the modern Buddhists are Chinese, while large numbers are found in Japan, Korea, Tibet, Siam and Ceylon. The four leading castes in India are the Brahmans, or priests, the military caste, the traders and the labourers. There are a great number of divisions of these castes.
