MAZIR'S PROGRESS.
FEI-MAH SPELLING. KING MUSK DOING WELL. Mr. R. B. Hines' Fei-Mah has been thrown out of work and will not be raced until next season, by which time he will have become fully furnished and ready <to stand a solid pr'eparatibn. The Paladin gelding has quite satisfied his_ owner that he can gallop, hence his decision not to hurry him. Mr. E. G. Gardiner's Royal - Secret ran a really good race in finishing second at Te Aroha to Bonny Gay on Saturday, but on Monday she failed to act in the heavier going. She is none the worse for her efforts and will be on hand for the Ohinenniri meeting next week. . At the Te Aroha meeting on Saturday there ,were persistent rumours to the elfect that the Cup candidate Gay. Rose had died that morning. As a matter- of fact, the Gay Shield mare 'had a-rather-severe attack of inflammation, but' she' was treated for " the complaint at', once,' and she recovered. She has not bfeen: worked on the track since and a decision will not. be made for some days as to whether she will line up in the Ohinemuri Cup contest. Mazir is in steady, work on the track and is moving more freely. The -hoof injury has yielded to treatment, but, his heel is yet very tender as the result of some days of poulticing. It is expected that he may be fit enough to undertake faster work early in the coming week, in view "of the Ohinemuri Cup. Mr. Gordon Wyborn, of T e Aroha, has leased his rising two-year-old chestnut filly by Captain Bunsby—Gold Beauty to Mr. R. Barlow, of New Plymouth. She is a well-grown juvenile, showing plenty of quality. Her white markings are very similar to those of her half-brother, D'Artagnan. . . King Musk, who joined xL. A. Keesing's team, is progressing favourably ' in his work and should soon be ready to race prominently. * . ■, So far the Acre gelding Ekanui has not been raced oii a firm track, and consequently has been unable to show to advantage. His track work, however, is very consistent, and the first'time he reproduces it with the colours up he should at least be in the firing line. ' ' The Te Monanui gelding Ellanui has been taken out of work for the meantime by his Paeroa owners and may not be raced until next season. ' The form shown at Te Aroha by Keith Lu gave the impression that he had not quite'recovered from his indisposition of a fortnight earlier. _ He has time to freshen up before racing at Paeroa, and if so may run into the money. . The five-year-old mare yueen JUu is to be given her first start in public at Paeroa next Saturday. She has undergone a good preparation,* and, judging by her consistency on the track, should beat more than Plymouth trainer 'R. Barlow, is remaining at Te Aroha;for a few days with his ; teara of four, -in view of the Ohinemuri meeting. ■ license granted. The Riccarton jockey A. E. Ellis has been advised that the executive committee of the New Zealand Racing Confeience has granted his application for trainer's license. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
