CORNWELL CUP. AUCKLAND VICTORY. TENTH RACE DECIDES CONTEST. By winning the tenth race, sailed late • on Saturday, Auckland won the Cornwell i Cup. Three races were held on Saturday, , the eighth being won by Christchurch, the ninth by Tauranga, and the tenth by Auckland. The ninth race was sailed on Saturday in a smart breeze from the northeast, a little stronger than the previous races. The race started at 2.25 p.m. off the Bayswater wharf, the course being three times round. Another good start saw the boats all away in 20s, except Whangarei. Otago was first over, followed by Kaiapoi, Manukau, Tauranga, Lyttelton, Auckland. Plimmerton, and the others all together, except Whangarei. Paremata gybed round the cnark first, closely followed by Plimmerton, Christchurch, Otago, Lyttelton, Tauranga and Auckland in this order. It was a broad lead across Shoal Bay to Northcote Point, and Paremata held her advantage l-ounding with a short lead from Plimmerton, with Tauranga close up. Tauranga passed the other two on the beat to the wharf, and the times rounding were: Tauranga, 2h 53m 15s; Plimmerton 2h 53m 365; Auckland, 2h 53m 3Ss; Otago, 2h 54m 21s; Wellington, 2h 54m 265; Paremata, 2h 54m 40s. On the second run ro the Pile mark Auckland took second place, with Plimmerton third. Tauranga held her lead round the Northcote mark, with Auckland close up and Plimmerton still third. Nearing the end of the second round Tauranga increased her lead from Auckland and looked a winner, but Auckland was fighting every bit of the way and set her spinnaker well for'ard, Tauranga quickly following. The second round was timed : —Tauranga, 3h 19m 52s ; Auckland, 3h 20m 295; Plimmerton, 3h 21m 4s; Otago, 3h 23m ISs; Paremata, 3h 24m 225; Christchurch, 3h 34m 30s; and the others handy. On the third run to Pile beacon Auckland, by keeping dead astern o£ Tauranga, picked up a few lengths. Plimmerton also closed up on the leauers, but Tauranga gybed round the mark with a few lengths' lead and quickly passed her spinnaker round to port and began to draw away from Auckland and Plimmerton. At the Northcote mark Tauranga luffed round with a lead of 20s, and both made a few short boards towards Sulphur Beach before coming round for a long leg on Jfort for the finishing line. Tauranga increased her lead, and the finish was :— Tauranga, 3h 4om 44s 1 Auckland, 3h 46m 19s 2 Plimmerton, 3h 47m 3s . . 3 Final Race. The tenth and final race of the contest was sailed late on Saturday in a light northerly breeze, starting at 5 p.m. Tauranga was tihe first away, followed by Lyttelton, Wellington, Paremata, Kaiapoi, Hamilton, Manjakau, Christchurch, Otago, and Auckland, in this order, only a lew lengths separating them. The course was three rounds oi' a windward and leeward one. The first round was completed by Auckland at 5h 27m 2'fs, Tauranga 5h 28m 325, Hamilton 5h 38m 495, Plimmerton 5h 29m 16s, Whangarei Oh 29m 375, Christchurch oh 30m 6s. The others were only a few minutes later. On the second round Auckland maintained her lead, with Plimmerton moving up to second, and Tauranga dropping back, but there was very little between any of them. The second round was timed by the leading boats. Auckland 5h 53m 50s, Plimmerton 5h 55m lis, Whangarei 5h 55m 38s, Manukau 5h 56m os, Hamilton Oh sUni 17s, Tauranga Oh siim 275. On the last time round Auckland rounded the lee mark 20 seconds ahead of Plimmerton, followed by Whangarei, Manukau and Tauranga in close order. Auckland again did well on the beat to the finishing line and increased her lead. •The boats finished:— Auckland (R. Bailey and L. Jordan), Oh 23ih 34s I Plimmerton (Watson Bros.), Gh 25m 19s 2 [Tauranga (D. Sneddon and S. Wilson), Gh 27m 53s ; 3 Whangarei, Gh 28m 35s 4 Manukau, Gh 29m 7s. Christchurch, Gh 29m 17s. The three leading crews received a great ovation as they crossed the line. Auckland crew won three races, Tauranga and Plimmerton two each, Manukau, Christchurch and Kaiajioi one each. The officials throughout the contest were:—Starter, Mr. A. Burt; judge, Mr. J. W. Rawlinson; timekeeper, Mr. Magnus I Smith; recorder, Mr. It. B. Aitken. Protest Dismissed. A protest on behalf of Plimmerton for interference by Hamilton in the tenth racc was discussed at length by the delegates on Saturday night. As their decision was not made before 10 p.m., Mr. W. A. Johnston aunounced that the cuji would not be presented until this evening, when the Monotype contest would also be decided, and both cups be presented at the clubhouse. After hearing further evidence the protest was dismissed. The visiting crews went to Kawau yesterday by tli£ Duchess, on the invitation of Messrs. WaCkin and Wallis, and all enjoyed the outing. The race for the Monotype championship of New Zealand in Takapuna Z class boats will be sailed this afternoon, followed by the racc for delegates. The visiting crews are competing in a race on Wednesday for a special prize offered by the Anniversary Regatta committee. Previous Winners.
