LIQUOR AFTER HOURS.
LISENSEE AND BARMAN FINED. As a result of a visit paid, by two constables to the Clarendon Hotel at 8.35 p.m. on December 10, the licensee, Walter H. Overton, was charged on summons in the Police Court yesterday with selling liquor after hours, while the barman, William Hayes, was charged with supplying liquor. Defendants, for whom Mr. J. Terry appeared, pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Fox said Hayes was found behind the bar, which was lighted. There were six men in the bar, five having no legal right on the premises. Two had liquor in front of them. The constables were admitted by the licensee's daughter, the licensee being absent from the premises that evening. "No complaints have been received about the conduct of this hotel," added Mr. Fox. Mr. Terry said the barman had been careless as the licensee had instructed him not to serve other than boarders. Mr. Overton had berfn a licensee in the North and South Island for over 30 years and had been in the Clarendon Hotel for two years. The licensee was fined £5 and Hayes, the barman, £4. and cost*.
