ELLERSLIE TRIALS.

PREPARING FOR TAKAPUNA. . SOME GOOD GALLOPS. KELLY,' CROONING,. FLEET WIND. Owing to the heavy rain the going for the .final gallops for the Takapuna meet-, ing at Ellerslie this morning was holding, but nevertheless some useful efforts were recorded. The best trials, of the morning were, those of Kelly. Fle.etwmd, .Crooning., Gay Defence and Marjory Daw, who all performed well. The course proper, with the poles 55ft out from the rails, was in most demand, while the two-year-old, tan and No. 3 grass tracks were also open. The Course Proper. Gay Marigold opened proceedings, and was allotted, a mile. She ran the first two furlongs in 25 2-ss, three in 38 2-ss, four in 52 1-os, and the full distance in 1.48 3-5. She went evenly throughout, and finished 011 well. Royal Appellant (Buchanan) and Tybalt (Manson) traversed a round in 2.17 2-5. covering the last half-mile- in 56 4-ss. They were not unduly bustled, and Royal Appellant did his work in good style. Tybalt was decidedly lame afterwards, and is unlikely to start at the meeting. Red Flame, after running the first three furlongs in 42 2-ss, got to the end of six furlongs in 1.20 2-o. She is in good order for coming engagements. Tea Chat and Knight of Australia. after running the first lialf-mile in 51 4-ss, were timed to complete a mile in 1.54 1-5. The latter was doing best at the end. Whirlmins finished in front of Marlene at the conclusion of five furlongs, which took 1.8 3-5. Over a similar distance Solas and Bayora registered 1.8 1-5. both hitting out freely. The best seven fnrlongs of the morning was credited to Ivelly. who ran the distance in 1.32, the last six furlongs taking 1.19 3-5. Courthaven, who went away in front of Kelly, ran her last six furlongs in 1.23 3-5. The two-year-olds Locknit, Master Vaals, Haputale and Lone Flier finished as named over half a mile in 556. Gay Defence finished well in front of Persian Lady at the end of five furlongs, which occupied 1.7 4-5. Gay Defence has come on fast during the last couple of weeks. Fleetwind, carrying a light weight,

was too good for Tidalia over six furlongs run in 1.20, the first three taking 40 l-ss. The stablemates Professional and Ringshot [ were under restraint throughout five furlongs completed in 1.10 3-5. Both horses ; look improved after their racing at , Thames. After running the first three fur- | longs in 40 l-5s Valspear got to the end [ of six furlongs in 1.23 1-5. He was going . comfortably at the finish, and could have done better. Teddy Boy did useful work, . running his last half-mile in 56 3-ss. Rereatu, after taking 3D 4-os for his first three furlongs, was going easily at the end of six furlongs in 1.22 4-5. Free Advice ; ran home from the half-mile post in 55 4-ss, but could have improved upon the : time. Mainland and Te Broney finished in front of Gay Princess over five furlongs, which took 1.8 3-5. The first-named pair worked well. Lorita dashed over half a . mile in 57 4-ss. Monanui strode over a mile and a quarter in 2.18 2-5, taking 1.41 2-5 for the last seven furlongs. She is 1 looking in first-rate condition. Valmint 1 worked over seven furlongs in 1.38 2-5, the first half-mile being covered in 555. Marjory Daw reeled off half a mile in 53 2-ss. It was the best of the morning over the distance, and she did her work well. United and Gemland finished-well in front of King Spear after going from a straggling start from the five-furlong post. They took 1.9. Crooning afid Valise, who are both engaged on Saturday, were companions over five furlongs. Crooning gave her companion several lengths' start, but was up with her at the end of two furlongs, and beat her home in 1.7 1-5. Valise took 1.8 2-5. Crooning covered a lot of ground, and her effort was a good one, while Valise also pleased. TYBALT WITHDRAW FROM CUP. Tybalt was withdrawn rrom' the Takapuna Cup at 12.5 p.m. to-day. STABLE AND TRACK NOTES WORK HAS BEEN ENCOURAGING. The name Mainland has been claimed for the Lucullus —Greyland mare in R. McTavish's stable. She is therefore a sister to Landlubber. Although Mainland has had no racing experience her track work has been encouraging, arid she-gives every indication of developing into a payable proposition when properly seasoned. TO RACE TO-MORROW. The Hastings trainer W. McKinnon will be represented at Trentham by Mesurina, who-is to carry out his contract in the Trial Stakes, to be run to-morrow. Mesurina has been responsible for attractive track work of late, and will strip a fit house. _ It was originally intended that Werohia would accompany_ Mesurina, but unfortunately he went slightly amiss . a few days ago. FAILED TO RUN ON. In both races that King Brierly contested at Thames last week Re displayed speed in the early stages, but failed to run on. Earlier in his career the son of King Lu gave every indication of turning out above the average.. However, he has not fulfilled expectations. King Brierly figures in two events at the Takapuna meeting

full i/wo events at tne j-attapuna meeting 3 next Saturday, but will need to make 5 marked improvement in order to win either race. 5 —— MAY MAKE AMENDS.. ' Since returning from Australia some months ago, Supreme Court has failed to win a race. His best showing this season was at the Wanganui meeting : last Sep- , tember, when he. ran second to Oratory in the. Trial Handicap, run over six furlongs. Supreme Court is entered for several minor : events at the next Wanganui meeting, to ' be held at the end of this month and may make amends for his past failures before that meeting ends. ENGAGED IN HIGH-WEIGHT. Dark Marble was responsible for a good effort when he rah third in the Waitemata Handicap at the Auckland summer 'meeting, and the first time he reproduces that form he will be hard to beat. The Lapidary gelding has been paid up for in f£e Orewa High-weight at the Takapuna meeting, and as the class is weaker than that which he met in the Waitemata Handicap he should be in the firing line at the finish. ? FORM WAS IMPRESSIVE. Prince Ven has not raced since the holidays, though he is stated to be shaping well in his work at Matamata. His form at the Auckland Christmas meeting was particularly impressive, as he won. the - Kobinson .Handicap from a strong field on. j the opening day and later finished third t in the Bowen Handicap to Boughal and ( Silver Streak. At the Takapuna meeting I next Saturday Prince Ven will contest the J Wynyard Plate, and summed up on his jlatest form he is likely to beat more than » will beat him. SHOWED PLENTY OF SPEED. It is some time since Puee Moth won a race, but he displayed some of his old-time ?P? e d in the Glasgow Handicap on the \ wu y ,°/ the recent Auckland meeting, a When at his best Puss Moth is capable of a ng ifi own with any of the sprinters d time an d he may not S iho W & e w \ umn g list. LIMBOHM'S SECOND. A STERLING PERFORMANCE, That Limbohm may have to be reckonet with as a candidate for the Anniversary Handicap, to be run over a mile and ;

half at Randwick on January 27, was suggested by the sterling: performance he registered in the eleven-furlong Canterbury Handicap recently (says an Australian writer). Left fully 20 lengths at the start, he filled second place, only a length behind Miss Nottava. Allowing that the field did not travel fast in the early stages, Limbohm had to be "used up" to some extent in making up his lost ground, and, in the circumstances, he fought' on remarkably well. He was two and a half lengths clear of the third place getter, Luxart, passing the judge. The stewards reported that Limbohm had refused to jumn away with the rest of the field. As lie was left similarly in the Kensington Handicap on December 23, it would seem that Limbohm still displays his bad habits at the barrier.
