WON BY TWO RUNS.

EXCITING SHIELD MATCH. ALL OVER IN TWO DAYS. WELLINGTON BEATS CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sunday. One of the. most remarkable Plunket Shield cricket matches ever played concluded in less than two days on the Basin Reserve yesterday, when Wellington defeated Canterbury in a thrilling finish by two rune. Wellington scored 19G and 112, and Canterbury 122 and 184.

The batting collapses can only be ascribed as a triumph tor the slow spin bowlers, who accounted for 26 wickets for 279 runs. The match fluctuated in a niost exciting fashion, and Canterbury's fight for the runs in the dying stages provided many thrills.

Merritt- captured 10 wickets for 121, Cromb eight for 82, and Griffiths eight for" 76 in the'match. The wicket-keepers also had a harvest in the match, Jackman, of Canterbury, stumping iseven batsmen and catching one, and Blandford stumping three and catching two.

With one wicket down for-18, Wellington's innings was resumed on a firm wicket, Ell and' Moloney raising 50 in 33 minutes. Ell was, dismissed, with the total at 72 after making 33, and Moloney fell eoon after for' 34. Four wickete then fell for 21 runs, Ward and Parsloe making a short stand, but the "innings closed after only 92 minutes for 112 ruua. ■ , Merritt and Cromb Deadly. .■ Wellington's, downfall was a triumph for the two spin bowlers, Merritt and Cromb, who both kept a good length and Varied their pace and spin cleverly. Merritt captured five for 49 off 14 overs, while Cromb secured four for 29 off 12.3 overs. Jackman was quick and alert behind the stumps, and the fielding was good. In Canterbury's second innings Kerr and Bellamy put on 22, and Bellamy and Cromb took the total to 72. Bellamy, batted nicely, but Cromb acted almost purely on the defensive.. With the total at 49, Cromb lifted one from Griffiths high to equare leg, where Ward made a brilliant attempt to take a catch, throwing himeelf full length. He dived and took the ball cleanly, but upon rjeing sportingly signalled that the ball had touched the ground, although the umpire had already ruled the bartsman out. Griffiths Spins Cleverly. Blundell bowled splendidly in the first hour, sending down 13 overs, seven of which were maidens, for 12 runs. Cobden batted brightly for 16, and O'Brien was also very confident. Roberts batted nicely in making 34. O'Brien made a great effort to win the match, forcing the pace while wickete were falling at the other end. He hit seven fours in making 45, and was dismissed when trying to make the winning hit with the last bateman at the other end.

Griffiths, although inclined to be rather erratic in length, made pace off the pitch and spun the ball cleverly. The Wellington fielding was good, especially the wicket-keeping of Blandford. The crowd rushed the ground at the finish, warmly congratulating the home players. Cromb subsequently paid a tribute to the Wellington bowling and fielding, while Lamason praised the bowling of Cromb and Merritt. Scores: — WELLINGTON. First innings 196 Second Innings.
