44 EXTRA HOLES!
One of the most memorable matches ever plaved in major golf in Australia was that between Tvo Whitton and Sloan Morpeth in the 1929 national amateur championships at Seaton. Scheduled for two rounds, it went 42 holes before Morpeth won. Four or five years before, in the Victorian amateur championship at Metropolitan, "Abe" Schlapp and "Peter" Headhim tied for last place among the qualifiers after 3(1 holes. They played an additional round and were still level, and then 10 more, and were even. After still another round no decision had been reached, and finally after 100 holes Schlapp won by a shot. In the tournament he got to the final. The Morpeth-Whitton duel is the Australian record for a match play extended game, and the Schlapp-Headlam marathon a record here for a stroke tie. But both are relatively ordinary "extensions" compared with a match between Chark'S Seymour and E. E. Wunner in a club tournament at Crystal Springs, U.S.A., in 1930. The match was arranged for 18 holes. All square then, they went on until darkness stopped them. When the match was resumed next day they went to the 02nd hole before Seymour won a hole and the match!
