NOVEL ABOUT A SALMON.
Many books have been written dealing with the life history of salmon. Henry Williamson, who eight years ago wrote "'Parka the Otter," has added to the list by publishing "Salar the Salmon" (Faber and Faber). Mr. Williamson, who lives beside a river, has a hatchery at the bottom of his garden, and has been hatching and studying salmon for many years. This book is therefore the work of a man who is both a novelist and a naturalist. It is a remarkable story— a salmon novel based on facts as much as on imagination. Salar is a five-year-old fish, and Mr. Williamson tells us about his adventures, his friends, and his enemies. The latter are not only fishermen and poachers but lampreys, otters, porpoises and other denizens of fresh and salt water, and a fox on the bank of a river, creeping down to drink. Written in choice English, with understanding and humour, "Salar" holds the attention from beginning to end. It is a book that will appeal, especially to Nature lovers.
