COUNTRY WEEK.

SECOND DAY'S PLAY. KEEN TOURNEY AT DEVONPORT. The country cricket tourney for the Heilaby Shield was continued on the Devonport Domain yesterday and resumed at Eden. Park this morning, where it concludes on Tuesday next. Some keen yet carefree cricket was witnessed at Devonport yesterday, the outstanding features being the bright innings of P. Porster (101) for Manukau, P. Howden (90) for Pukekohe, P. Do*- (69), Poverty Bay, E. Wyatt (50), Northland, and L. Strachan (40 not out), Manukau. The best bowling performance of the tourney so far was registered by the Gisborne colt G. Stewart, a fine slow spin bowler, with a deceptive flight and change of pace. He secured five wickets for 20, and then seven for 17 against Riverhead, being largely accountable for Poverty Bay registering the only outright win so far recorded in the tourney. In Riverhead's second innings Stewart narrowly missed the hat-trick, securing three victims with four balls. Other good bowling averages were shown by Barnett (Waipa> seven for 62 and five for 32 against Manukau, P. Howden (Pukekohe) four for 38, and Cooper (Pukekohe) five for 40 against Northland, and Dunning (Northland) six for 57 against Pukekohe. The most exciting finish was on No. 1 wicket, where Pukekohe were dismissed for a moderate 167, and the holders seemed certain of defeat when Northland had 132 on for the loss of but two wickets at tea time. But Howden and Cooper bowled so well after the interval that Northland added only 14 for the remaining eight wickets and were defeated by 21 runs. The scoring of points is the same as for the local championship competitions, and the position after the two rounds at Devonport is as follows:-— NORTH AUCKLAND V. PUKEKOHE. PUKEKOHE.—First Innings.
