T] ie Marylebone Cricket Club touring . m opened a • match against South Canterbury at Eraser Park to-day, and delighted, a large gathering ..with ..a sparkling batting display "to score 182 uns in 141 minutes. The total included L 0 s jxes and 18 fours. It was a refresh- . „ afternoon's cricket, the heat being tempered by a cool easterly breeze. The wicket was slightly tricky and a3 inclined to favour the bowlers when the visitors, who won the toss, decided to hat. After the first hour, however, it improved, and by the time it had been rolled after the conclusion of the visitors' innings it was fa.st and true. The match had rather a sensational opening Vlien Reynolds., the Temuka fast bowler, who opened the attack from the northern end, completely beat Smith, the Derbyshire professional and brilliant* left-hander, with the fourth ball of, the day. The crowd received another thrill when Lee replaced Reynolds, and with the first ball dismissed Barber, the Yorkshire captain, Ibw. Forceful Hitting. ' The first three wickets fell cheaply, but Human, the Middlesex batsman, and Holme*/ the visiting captain, scored speedily and provided a display of forceful hitting. Holmes was magnificent in bis off-driving, and there were -many bursts' of applause as he frequently found'the boundary fences. His total of 61, which included eight fours, was compiled in 62 minutes. Langridge, the Sussex professional, was another batsman who pleased. He was aggressive at the start, and was the only Batsman to score six, lifting the bowlers brilliantly on two occasions. He give a' splendid exhibition to score 49 in 86 minutes. He was rather unfortunate in being dismissed by a spectacular catch, which Halm had to jump for on the long-on boundary.
After, liahgridge had departed the scoring (slowed up considerably, and with the exception of Griffith, the Cambridge University wicket-keeper, the remaining batsirien. did not enter double figures. The ipnings closed at 4.50 for 182.
- Allcott's Able Captaincy. Alldptt ablj r handled the South Can-terbury-attack, which at no stage could be treated lightly. Kane, who was making his third appearance before M.C.C;' teams, bowled 15.3 overs and provided a sensational climax to. the Englishmen's innings when he captured the'last two wicket-s with successive balls. ; Allcott was always treated with respect, and at times his form was reminiscent of his best performances when', he bowled with distinction for New Zealand. The brunt of the attack fell on him. He sent down 19 overs, unchanged,; and took three wickets for 38 mis. *
At stumps South Canterbury had lost threeifbr 48, Read getting all three irickejs.
