TROTTING.

AUCKLAND CARNIVAL.

THE OPENING DAY. CUP TO GRAHAM DIRECT. DEAD-HEAT IN SPRINT EVENT. The first day of the Auckland Trotting Club's summer meeting was held at .Alexandra Park yesterday in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance, and the track was fast. The- Cup resulted in a lino victory for tho favourite, Graham Direct, while the. open sprint provided a dead-heat between Travis and Smooger. In winning the Akarana Handicap in 3.18 Bonny Azure created a new course winning record. Investments for the day reached £34,884, compared with £30,789 last year, an increase of £4095. The Favourite Wins. All the acceptors went to the post for tho Auckland Trotting Cup for which Graham Direct, Tempest, the bracket, Pegaway and Worthy Light, and Rey Spec had most friends. Impromptu broke up at the start and lost a lot of ground, Nimbus leading out from Willie Derby, Pegaway,. Kewpie's Triumph, Graham Direct, Roy Spec and Tempest. Passing the stands the first time Nimbus was followed by Pegaway, Willie Derby and Kewpie's Triumph, there not being much between them, while a couple of lengths back was Graham Direct with Rey Spec, Tempest and Worthy Light following. When they came round again Nimbus was still in charge from Pegaway and Willie Derby together, Graham Direct and Kewpie's Triumph, together, Worthy Light and Rey Spec, together, and Tempest. Along the back the last time Nimbus was attended by Willie Derby, Kewpie's Triumph, Pegaway, Graham Direct, Rey Spec, Worthy Light and Tempest. About half a wile from home Pegaway broke and caused Graham Direct to lose about a couple of lengths, while Tempest was almost down, and had his chances completely spoiled. Nimbus was about three lengths clear of .Graham Direct as they crossed the top, the pair being attended by Kewpie's Triumph, Worthy Light and Rey Spec. The order into the straight was the same, and Graham Direct finished on to win by half a length from Rey Spec, who beat Worthy Light by a length, with Nimbus a length and a half away, followed by Kewpie's Triumph, Willie "Derby and Tempest. A Close Finish. Replica, Argolis and Tryment were scratched for the Christmas Handicap, for which Valdor, Aircraft and King's Guide were best backed. Bismuth and Derby Fame tangled at the start and going out of the straight Bismuth was pulled up owing to some of his gear breaking. Aerial Boy was the early leader from Lucky Love, Cherrill, Valdor, Red Frontier and Aircraft, but when they came past the stands at the end of a round Valdor was in charge from Star Pronto, Aerial Boy, Nervie's Last, Lucky Love, Cherrill and Red Frontier. There was not much change along the back or across the top and Valdor was followed into the straight by Star Pronto, Nervie's Last and Red Frontier. Nervie's Last challenged the leader, but failed to reach him by a head, with Star Pronto three-quarters of a length away. Then came Cherrill, Aerial Boy, Lucky Love, Worthy Chief and Aircraft. The Rowe Memorial. Waikato Prince was the only withdrawal from the Rowe Memorial Handicap, for trotting horses only. The bracket, Golden Eagle and Great Admiral was first choice, while the bracket Nelson Luvan and Kuini also had support. Captain Bolt, Dilfashion, Audo Patch and Great Admiral were the early leaders, and passing the stands the first time Audo Patch was in charge from Great Admiral, Autumn Lu, Captain Bolt and Dilfashion. There was not much change when they came round again. Audo Patch was attended along the back the last time by Great Admiral, Autumn Lu,, Dilfasjiion and Captain Bolt, and they turned for home in this order, Great Admiral beating Audo Patch by three-quarters of a length, with Autumn Lu two lengths and a half away, followed by Captain Bolt, Dilfashion, Gala Day anc Kuini. One to Takanini. Mazda and Kewpie's Bond were not harnessed up for the Akarana Handicap and Bonny Azure and Rongomai were the chief fancies. Social Pest and Kewpie's King tangled a bit at the start, losing some ground, Luminate leading out from Rongomai, Our McKinney, Blandford and Bonny Azure. Passing the stands Luminate was followed by Rongomai, Bonny.Azure, Our McKinney, Blandford, Guid'Hairst and Social Pest, Silver Watch having broken and fallen right back. Luminate and Bonny Azure led along the back from Rongoma\ Our

McKinney and Guid Hairst. Bonny Azure was first into the home stretch from Rongomai, Our McKinney and Guid Hairst and went on to score by half a length from Rongomai, who beat Our McKinney by three lengths. Blandford, Guid Hairst and Social Pest were next. A Dead-heat. The day's programme concluded with the. St. Helier's Handicap, in which the best backed were Rey Spec, Travis and Homeward. Travis, Waress and Homeward were prominent early, but passing the stands Edna Worthy had taken charge, and was showing the way to Travis, Waress, Smooger, Homeward, Francis Lincoln and Wee Machine. Edna Worthy, Travis and Smooger were the leading trio along the back, but Travis then took charge, and led into the straight from Smooger, Edna Worthy, Key Spec and Wee Machine. A rare hattlo then ensued, and the judge was unable to separate Travis and Smooger, with two lengths to Homeward, who finished well. Edna Worthy was fourth, and Francis Lincoln and Wee Machine next.
