CADGHEY OUT FOR WELSH TEST MATCH.

MITCHELL CENTRE.

Still a Doubt About Half-

Back Position,

PACK NOT DEFINITE,

United Press Association.— -Copyright.

(Received 12.30 p.m.)

LONDON, December 20.

T. H. C. Caughey, the crack Auckland second five-eighths and centre, is definitely out of the All Black team to play Wales at Cardiff tomorrow. A leg injury forced the selection committee to drop him. There is a doubt too, about the pack. It has not yet been decided whether to play H. F. McLean (Auckland), or R. M. McKenzie (Manawatu).

■ The special correspondent 6f the United Press Association says that the New Zealand team will be chosen from:—

Full-back: G. D. M. Gilbert (West Coast).

Three-quarters: N. J. Ball (Wellington), N. A. Mitchell (Southland), G. F. Hart (Canterbory).

Five-eighths: C. J. Oliver (Canterbury), J. L. Griffiths (Wellington).

Half-back: B. S. Sadler (Wellington) or M. M. N. Corner (Auckland).

Front Row: A. Lambourn (Wellington), W. E. Hadley (Auckland), D. Dalton (Hawke's Bay). Middle Row: J. E. Manchester, captain (Canterbury), R. R. King (West Coast), Tory Reid (Hawke's Bay), H. F. McLean (Auckland) or R. M. McKenzie (Manawatu). Back Row: A. Mahoney (Bush). The Welsh team is:— Full-back: V. G. J. Jenkins (London Welsh). Three-quarters: W. Wooller (Cambridge University), J. Hwal Rees (Swansea), B. C. Davey (Swansea), t*. R. Rees-Jones (Oxfprd University). Half-backs: C. W. Jones (Cambridge), H. Tanner (Swansea). Forwards: E. Watkins (Cardiff), D. J Tarr (Navy and Swansea), H. Payne (Swansea), T. Williams (Cross Keys), T Rees (Newport), A. M. Rees (London Welsh), J. I. B. Lang (Llanelly), G. Prosser (Neath). All but Tanner, Williams, Watkins, Tarr and Payne are former Welsh internationals. to the "Star," London, there is a possibility that several of the All Black team will join Rugby League next season. Three forwards, the paper says, are especially interested.

Although it is not stated in ttie cable message, it appears that the weather conditions are doubtful for the Test match, for if the game was to be played on a heavy ground decision over both the half-back and side-row positions would have been made.

In the light of cabled reports during the week the indications are that if the day is fine and the ground dry Sadler will be played, but if the ground .is heavy Corner will take his place behind the pack. Again, if the day is fine McLean is likely to win a place instead of McKenzie, but if it rains McKenzie is almost certain to be played for the reason that he is one of the best wet weather forwards on the side.

Although Caughey's brilliance on attack will be eadly missed if the day is fine and the ball is dry, New Zealanders should have every confidence in the back line that will take the field. Oliver's generalship will be just as valuable at second five-eighth as it would be in the centre, and with a sound attacking player and relentless tackier in Mitchell in the centre the back line should be well held together. Ball, who wins a place in a Test side for the first time, is capable of brilliant things, and has a reputation for being able to rise to the occasion. The bigger the occasion the better he plays is the opinion of his Wellington supporters.

No matter who plays on the side of the scrum —McLean or McKenzie —New Zealand should be able to win its fair share of the ball, and with either Sadler or Corner to serve them the backs should be capable of scoring the points which lead to victory.
