LOCAL BODIES.
NEW LYNN
A special meeting of the New Lynn Borough Council was held on Ihursclay evening. The Mayor. Mr. Geo. Lawson, presided over a full attendance ot members.
Scheme 5 Men.—The foreman reported that the number of men engaged on .No. 5 scheme had gradually reduced with the increase in prosperity and the opening of the brickworks. A Christmas bonus of 10/ per man was voted by the council to those at present employed. Rubbish Collection.—A special rubbish collection was authorised for Monday, December 23. The sanitary inspector was instructed to carry out an inspection ot all premises within the borough. Sewerage System.—The borough foreman repotted that 41 premises had been connected to the sewer during the past 12 months. The septic tanks had been periodically inspected and samples taken (if the effluent from time to time had shown that it was clean. One taken by the health authorities was declare! to be satisfactory from their point of view. Water. — A report submitted by the turncock stated that during the past two months special sounding operations had been conducted with the object of lessening the water wastage. Two leaks ot lorn; standing had been, discovered. Services which had been m since the reticulation was installed were now getting to that stage when replacement would be necessary. The whole of the reticulation system wanted overhaul, especially relating to valvee. This would cost in round figures £1000.
Building. — The building inspector reported that permits issued during the year totalled 33. Motor Licenses.— During the past six months 417 motor drivers licenses were issued. These figures were 25 .more than for the whole 12-monthly period of last year.
HOWICK TOWN BOARD
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Howick Town Board was held last evening, Mr. 11. H. Bushell presiding.
Hall Alterations.—A subsidy amounting to £24 18/ has been granted by the Unemployment Board for alterations and additions to the Town Hall. Ihe work is now well under way and should be completed early in the New Year. Diving Platform.—The Marine Department has given its consent to the erection of the proposed diving platform at the beach, subject to the boards undertaking to remove the structure it called upon. Highway 407.—Plans and specifications were submitted by the engineer, Mr. A. Greville Walker, for the tar sealing of Cook Street. Consideration was deferred till the next meeting.
Water Consumption. — The turncock reported that the water consumption during the last fortnight was double that of the previous fortnight. The board, is taking steps to ensure that no waste ot water will occur during the summer months.
Congratulations.—The clerk was instrueted to convey the board's congratulations to Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P., on his success at the election, and also to write to the late member, Mr. W. W. Maasey, thanking him for his services. Vacation.—The next meeting of the board will be held on the first Thursday in February. The offices will be closed for ten days from December 24.
