BOARD MEMBERS' COMMENTS
jfEW TUNICS SUGGESTED.
"Discarded old blouses that have been u5C( j women"'; "Give them skirts to with them"; and "They are a diswere comments made by memJTovt) ws of the Auckland Transport Board this morning, when referring to the new unuiief tunics issued to conductors and motormen on Auckland trams. The matter was raised by Mr. J. | Save"h, who referred to the -'so-called | summer tunics." "When I first saw them yesterday, I thought to myself, what is this? Are our trams being run bv a board of navvies? The sooner we r-et rid of these tunics the better. They are terribly cheap-looking things. They look as though they are discarded old Houses that have been used by women around the house," said Mr. Sayegh. •'The best thing we can do is to call them in and get an entirely new outfit."
The chairman, Mr. H. G. R. Mason, explained, that the uniform had been adopted after consultation witli representatives of the conductors and motorinen, and the tunics had been accepted bv them as satisfactory. If they were not now satisfied, there was a proper channel through which the men could lay a complaint. "Most of us hare reached an age where we are so conservative that anything new appears ludicrous," remarked Mr. J. A. C. Allum. "However, if we can get something different, so much the better."
Mr. E. J. Phelan: The first thing that struck me when I saw them was that we should provide the men with skirts to go with them, but on second thoughts I decided that shorts would be better. That would give them that boy scout appearance. They are a disgrace, and they should be called in at once.
Mr. Mason explained that the tunics had been adopted because they were the standard design for tramwaymen workjag in tropical countries.
Mr. F. E. Lark asked that a report should be furnished by the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, on the cost of the new uniforms and the estimated cost of another suitable tunic, preferably of aipacca.
The matter was left over in the meantime.
