MAN ALMOST DROWNED. BOY DIVES TO RESCUE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) ROTORUA, this day. While swimming at Sulphur Point, one of the popular bathing places on the shores of Lake Rotorua, yesterday afternoon Mr. Horace Goodwin, aged 22, had a very.narrow-escape frOnt drowning, being taken from the water when he was practically at his last gasp. Mr. Goodwin, it is understood, was by himself at the time and consequently his plight was not noticed When he fint got into difficulties, despite the fact that there were a number of bathers and picnickers in the vicinity. His cries finally attracted attention, but by this time he was almost exhausted and sank. A boy named Marci'oft, showing considerable presence of riiind, dived and brought the drowning man to the surface, where he held him until two young, men, Messrs. Thoiripsdn and Bradley, were able to reach him and bring him ashore. • It was only afteryhalf an hour's art;-, licial respiration that the first signs of life returned, and/it seems certain that had the young man been left in the water for only a few moments longer nothing could have been done to save him. COLLIDED WITH TRAMCAR. MOTOR CYCLIST'S DEATH. (By Telegraph.—l?ress Association.) * CHRISTCHIJRCH, Sunday. Fatal injuries were received by Mr. William Henry Prior Gibson, aged 20, single, of Sumner, when the motor cycle he Was riding collided with a tramcar at. ■RedcliiTs, Sumner, about 6 o'clock last evening. He was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital, where he died early this morning. CAB HITS POWER POLE. Four people were injured, but only one at all soriously, when a closed car hit a power pole following a collision with another car at the corner of Gillies Avenue and Owens Road, Epsom, on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. A. A. Avery, of 4, Kingsview Road, Mount Eden, was taken to the Auckland Hospital in a St. John ambulance, suffering from concussion. Her condition is not serious. The driver, Mr. T. Logan, of Pukekawa, and two other passengers were treated for cuts and abrasions at the casualty ward. The driver of the second car was Mr. A. T. Newdick.
