WATER SUPPLY.
MOUNT HOBSON RESERVOIRS. OFFICIAL TURNING ON. The official turning on of the water supply from the two reservoirs which have been erected on Mt. Hobson for the purpose of ensuring a good water supply for the Remuera and Tamaki districts will take place at 11 o'clock to-morrow morning. A brief ceremony is being arranged by the chairman of the general purposes committee of the Auckland City Council, Mr. C. Bailey. The reservoirs are each of 2.000,000 gallons capacity and their construction became necessary owing to the shortage of pressure in the summer months when a big demand was made on the water supply, particularly in the evenings when gardeners got busy with hoses. The water mains were not sufficiently large to cope with this demand, and the storage capacity of the small reservoir was severely taxed. This season with the increased storage that has been provided and the additional mains laid since last summer the position is not likely to be so serious. Further steps are being taken at the present time to improve the water supply in the Remuera and Tamaki areas and recently a start was made with the putting down of a 10-inch main in Lillington Road and Green Lane. The programme of main laying it is expected will not be completed until next summer, but sufficient work is being carried out at the present time to prevent the pressure falling to zero as it did for a considerable part of the summer last year on the higher levels.
