PEERS AS JURY.
Manslaughter Charge Against
Lord de Clifford,
WEARING OF COCKED HATS,
LONDON, December 11
The trial of Lord de Clifford tomorrow on a charge of manslaughter will probably be the last time a peer will be arraigned before his peers.
The Marquess of Huntly, in the House of Lords yesterday, moved that it should not be obligatory upon peers to wear cocked hats in addition to robes.
The Lord Chancellor, Viscount Hailsham, expressed the opinion that there was much to be said for the view that this method of trial had outlived its usefulness. Their Lordships might perhaps think it desirable on an early occasion to express, an opinion to that effect, but as long as the old method was maintained it might be consonant with the dignity of the House to conform to the custom. So the peers tomorrow will wear their cocked hats.
