GIFT OF PICTURE.

NATIONAL ART GALLERY.
OFFER OF A PORTRAIT,
A valuable addition to the National art collection in Wellington has been I made in the form of a gift by Mr. George i Shirtclift'e, of a painting called "Peace in Her Loneliness" (the Lledyr Valley, North Wales), by S. J. Lamorna Birch, the well-known artist.
The picture was displayed in tjiis year's Royal Academy exhibition in London and is a fufe example of Lamorna Birch's work. It is not proposed to
exhibit tlic painting publicly until the opening of the new art gallery.
Mr. Sliirtcliffe, who is a member of the board of trustees of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum, has taken a helpful and keen interest in the scheme since its inception.
A fine portrait of the late Sir Robert Stout, formerly Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, painted by Mr. A. F. Nicoll, Christchurcli, lias been offered to the board of trustees for inclusion in the national portrait section of the new art gallery (states the "Dominion"). The painting was presented some years ago to the late Sir Robert Stout, by the Wellington Bar, and it has been offered to the board of trustees by Dr. Duncan Stout on behalf of tlio family. In accepting the gift, the trustees expressed appreciation of the action of the donors in giving to the national collection such a tangible memento of one who piayed so important a part In the history of the Dominion.
