WASHOUTS AND SLIPS.

WANGANUI RIVER ROAD.

MUCH REPAIR WORK NEEDED,

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

WANGANUI, this day.

The engineer of tlie Wanganui County Council, Mr. B. R. Dawson, made a tour of inspection of the Wanganui Eiver Road yesterday, travelling as far as ha could by car and covering the remainder of the route on horseback. He states that, with washouts and slips, the road is in a very bad state, and that it will be at least three mouths before it is open. In some places where the water poured off the hills it tore away culverts, and in these places a great deal of filling will bo required. Deposited near one washout was a tree about 45ft long and 3ft in diameter, giving a fair idea of the quantity of water that rushed down the valley. It is hardly likely that the road will be open for tourist traffic befora tlio holiday season concludes. It is possible to travel up tho road for about 25 miles from Wanganui.
