NEW SPORTS GROUND.

BIRKENHEAD OPENING.

CEREMONY ON DECEMBER 14.

The new sportS ground formed in the Birkenhead reservoir reserve is to be officially opened by the Mayor of Birkenhead, Mr. George Mills, at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday week. The first cricket match will then be played.

The energy and support extended to the project by Mr. E. J. Osborne was recorded in an appreciative vote of thanks to him by the Borough Council last night.

Mr. Osborne said that the sports ground was badly needed and the Birkdale Cricket Club had taken the leading part towards pushing the objective to a successful conclusion. This season the cluh's A team had won every match so far and the B team had lost only one. The fourth grade was filled with boys from all over the district and next year the club would have a fifth grade as well.

The area was levelled under the supervision of the borough council with relief workers under Scheme 5 for the relief of unemployment. The area now available for a cricket field comprises two acres. Further improvements are to be carried out and seating accommodation provided, while the higher ground of the amphitheatre is to be beautified by planting native trees and palms.
