OVERSEAS MAILS.
40,000 LATE LETTERS.' (To the Editor.) , The paragraph in Monday's "Star" record ing that on the previous Monday 40,000 letter" were posted in Wellington between mid-da* and the closing of the Limited mail, tocatef the Aorangi in Auckland next »ioriiin<y puts' what appears to be an entirely con struction on the incident. The'"late posting habit" of the general public is well known" and should be corrected, but it is unfair to' blame the Wellington public on this occasion The facte are these. On Monday lnoniiii" the Makura arrived in Wellington from Sail franeisco at 4.30, bringing mails from the United States, Canada and London, and it is rather too much to expect Wellington residents biriness or private, to answer all that correspondence during the morning, to catch thn three o'clock exprers mail, presumably elosin* at 1.30. Naturally the bulk of the mail was posted by the Limited, when they Ifhd the convenience of all day to give it attention. I„ Auckland we had no time, for this city's share of the Makura mail only arrived by the momiug express on Tuesday, and the Aorangi mail closed at ten o'clock. 31111011711 there has never been any evidence to show wliy Auckland should sutler this inconvenience every fourth ' Tuesday, when the Vancouver steamer could. just as easily leave .seven or eight hours later " ; giving Auckland the whole day to answer just like Wellington. In fact last week the Lindine Iff*, more than four days later than the Aorangi. and yet both mails will read, London on the same day. The alternate fort-' night ueed to be just as bad, for the Vancorner mail usually arrives on a Monday" morning, often too late for the morning ' delivery, making it impossible to answer by. the San Francisco mail via WelUngton.-closiu'T i here at 1.30 p.m. the same day. However tiie * postal authorities at last adopted my 'siig.. : , gestion to make' an additional clearance .for'' the Limited, and this is a convenience ciated by the public, even though it at 4.30, instead of the usual 3 p.m. ' : "J?m POSTER.
