NO WASTE OF MONEY.
SALVAGING CROWN * FARMS, i ASSURANCE BY MINISTER. j (By -Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, Tuesday. The Whakatane Chamber of Com- i nierce recently suggested to the Minister 1 of Lands, Sir Alfred Ransom, that it might be more profitable.to develop idle f land than to recondition abandoned ] farms. In his reply the Minister states:— i "The idea is to salvage Crown lease- ■' holds and recurities, particularly in J those cases where the work involved ' is of the nature of clearing, top-dress- jing and stocking. The purpose of the , scheme is twofold, the immediate f employment of a large amount of c manual labour provided by the Un- i employment Board, and the salvaging of t Crown moneys already involved. £ a "Your chamber may rest assured that \ there is no question of the wholesale expenditure of Government moneys on worthless properties. Only selected . areas are being dealt with, and these must show prospects of economic j development before any work will be , proceeded, jvith." *i
