UNUSUAL CHARGE.
ALLEGED FRAUD ATTEMPT. SEQUEL TO AN ARREST. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday., An alleged attempt to obtain £00 from the parents of a civil servant, who was under arrest for theft, by representing that there was a7i additional shortage in the accounts of his department, was the substance of a charge brought in the Magistrate's Court today against a salesman, William Alexander Welsh. He pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
William Baker, a postal employee, was at the time of the alleged false pretence under arrest on a charge of theft, and it was alleged that Welsh visited the 'parents of William Baker, saying that he (Welsh) had received a "letter from a friend in the department stating that a further deficiency of £00 in Baker's accounts had been discovered, but that if the £00 were found in a day or two nothing more need be heard of it. Baker's father consulted ,i solicitor, and the police were later informed. Welsh would not disclose the name of the writer of the letter, it was stated.
Evidence was given by officers of the department, stating that there was no additional deficiency of £60.
