NO INTERJECTIONS.
CHAIRMAN MOVES MOTION. A brief outline of the policy of the Democrat party was given by Mr. W. G. Clavis, Democrat candidate for Roskill, at the Kingston Avenue Hall last night. The small hall was filled and there were no interjections during the address. Asked why the Democrat party had fixed £267 as the maximum income for receiving insurance benefits, Mr. Clavis said that it had been carefully worked out, and to give the benefits to people receiving more than £267 would be enormously costly. In any case - those getting more than £267 could not be considered as being in need of the benefits. In reply to another question, Mr. Clavis admitted that the Democrat party intended to borrow up to £20,000,000 in four years. "There's nothing like being frank about it, if you do go in," remarked a woman amid laughter. The chairman proposed a vote of confidence in the candidate. This was seconded, but the chairman forgot to put it to the meeting and no vote was taken. Mr. Clavis then moved a vote of thanks to the chair, which was carried by acclamation.
