COUNTRY'S NEED.
LOCAL MANUFACTURES. \ DEVELOPMENT URGED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON.N., Friday. Development of manufacturing industries was urged by Mr. A. E. Mander, general secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation, in an address, "The Future of New Zealand," to the Manawatu branch of the New Zealand Economic Society. Mr. Mander held that there were no longer any grounds for expecting the farm industries to continue their expansion of exports. It followed, therefore, that further development must rest with the growth of internal trade —the increasing exchange of farm produce for manufactured goods and also the exchange of some manufactured goods for other manufactured goods, all produced within New Zealand. This would involve the further development of manufacturing industries. His contention, however, was mostly conditional upon New Zealand continuing to increase -her population and in the hope that during the next few years a plan of systematic and large-scale immigration would be embarked upon. If the population grew at all it was bound to be accompanied by a corresponding development of factory production. "I think that one-half of all our future increases in population will need to be absorbed in manufacturing industry, leaving the other half to be absorbed mainly by transport, building and farming for our domestic market and distributive trade," said Mr. Mander.
