Bowlers Difficult.
Ponsonby Score Slowly Against King's. Aided by a strong wind blowing straight down the wicket, King's Old Boys' bowlers kept the early Ponsonby batsmen very quiet on X T o. 2 wicket at Kden Park, nearly an hour's play producing only 1!) runs from 19 overs, 10 of which were maidens, for the loss of one wicket.
Stalhvorthy and Cotterall oponed for Ponsonby against Keddle and Hewitt, the latter petting Cotterall caught behind when he had scored a single, the only run registered. Later S. Cf. Smith and Andrews took over the bowling and kept the batsmen tied up, runs coming very slowly and mainly in singles. Stallworthy had an escape when Hewitt failed to hold an easy catch, but immediately afterwards W. S. Smith lifted the bails when Cleave stepped out to Andrews. 23—2 —10. Sneddon's appearance at the crease signalised a faster rate of scoring, but he could not get on to S. G. Smith, who at this stage had bowled seven maidens in nine overs and lost only three runs. Andrews sccured his second wicket when W. S. Smith caught Stallworthv behind. 34—3 —12. Scholium did not stay long, being caught at mid-off by Lewis off S. Smith. .")•")—4 —11. Monteith added three to the total when he was clean
bowled by Andrews, and Clark skied an easy one to Lewis off S. G. Smith. 01—(»—2. Sneddon was the next to go, driving tho ball back bard to S. G. Smith, from whoso hands it bounced into Lewis', who held the catch, til—7—2l. lie had made a stubborn stand and was the only batsman to shape at all confidently. Cleverley scored two singles before being given out Ibw oil' Andrews, and Stewart was caught by L. M. Smith after scoring a single. The last man, Williamson, joined Lnngton, who made a gallant effort to make the tail wag, knocking Andrews and Smith about for the first time in the innings, adding 2li in 10 minutes and bringing up tho century after ISO minutes of play. Langtoil continued to play brightly until Pearson accepted a chance off S. G. Smith, the innings c-lpsing for 107, of which Langton contributed 40. King's opening was disastrous, Cleverley's first ball spread-eagling Lewis' wicket before a run had been scored. Pearson joined L. M. Smith, but onlj four runs had been added when Clark took a beautiful left-hand catch in the slips from Pearson off Cleverley. 4—2—l. The umpires conferred before Pearson was given out. Smith and Martin held up their wickets, but the, scoring was very slow, although not as slow as Ponsonby's start, 17 runs being registered in 40 minutes. After Martin and McCarthy had been dismissed cheaply, L. M. Smith and S. G. Smith carried the score along slowly but | surely. Scores:— . I'OXSOXBY.—First Innings. SI all worthy, <• W. S.
