SPOTS ON THE SUN.

TOTAL OF 59 OBSERVED. LARGEST 33,000 MILES LONG. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) i WELLINGTON, this day. It is a long time since so many spots have been observed together on the sun as were observed at the Dominion Observatory at Wellington 011 Wednesday. Mr I. L. Thomson, of the observatory staff, "charted five distinct groups, two large ones and three smaller ones. There were forty spots in one group, and nine, seven, two and one in the others respectively, a total of 59 in all. It is common to find as many as 40, but a total of 59 is not often reached. The largest' spot in the largest group was estimated by Mr. Thomson to be 33,000 miles long. The whole group was, much larger, being about 110,000 miles in length. Mr. Thomson considers the maximum of the" sun cycle is being approached, and the indications are that it will be rather a heavy one. The cycle has been working up for about two years, and probably "Will be at its maximum in another two or three years.
