"A GROTESQUE CHILD."

I OltfGIN Or DEMOCRATS. Mr. T. J. Fleming, National Government candidate for Roskill, .caused considerable amusement at his meeting in Dominion Road last night by his references to the Democrat party. He said that some very excellent people were at first inclined to favour the proposed new party and it was well that they should know something of its origin. Its origin was a disgruntled organiser who _had parted company - with the National party and immediately set out "to originate a new political baby." He made a beeline for a former Reform supporter and persauded him to find the money necessary "to organise the baby," but when Mr. Davy produced the infant prodigy "its putative father" would have nothing to do with it. Its godfathers also turned- away from it and Mr. Davy had to proceed to Wellington where he induced an innocent solicitor to father the grotesque child. A weekly paper had made a careful estimate and found that It would take £50,000,600 per annum to carry out the Democrat plan. That, of course, was what one would expect from a band of political novices, equally ignorant of politics and economics.
