A WOMEN'S REGISTER.
Unemployment among -women and girls is one of the problems which has never been successfully dealt with, largely because so little is known about it. Therefore the Mayor's decision, in reply to a deputation of Auckland women yesterday, to open a register, was a natural and proper one. Until tho number of those who need assistance is discovered nothing useful can be done to prepare plans. What must appear strange to tho majority of citizens is that the matter has not been taken up earlier in this way. Employment is now expanding, and more girls arc securing. positions in domestic service, in the shops and offices and in the factories, and the demand will increase in the coming weeks. The worst season, the winter, has passed, and a substantial improvement is occurring in business and trade. Women and girls will share in the benefits of this recovery. The proposed register should quickly disclose wnethei: the position is as bad as the deputation suggested. To assist the Mayor's purpose all who need help should hand in their names promptly.
