VEGETABLES DEARER

SHORTAGE OF PUMPKINS. FIRST CHERRIES ARRIVE. The supply of tree tomatoes is about finished, but the first of the local crop of cherries arrived on the market to-day, selling at 21/6 for a small case. The first shipment this season of Jamaican oranges was also sold to-day to a fair demand. Good quality dessert apples sold well today, the poor lines meeting with no demand. There was a good demand for New Zealand grapefruit, and lemons showed an improvement in value. An increase in the quantity of hothouse tomatoes offered to-day resulted in a considerable fall in prices. A large shipment of fruit arrived yesterday by the Ngakuta from Fiji, including bananas, pineapples, paw paws, grcnadilloes and also a supply of kumaras and taro. Quotations are:— Apples: Canadian, 18/ to 20/ per case; Delicious, 7/ to 12/6; Stunners, 6/ to 11/; Rome Beauty, 0/ to 9/; Dougherty, 6/ to 8/6. Pears: P. Barry, 9/ to 12/; Nelis, 12/ to 14/. Cherries: 21/6 per small case. Passions: 12/ to 15/ per case. Loquats: Choice, large, 4/ to 6/6; small, 1/ to 2/. Gooseberries: 6/ to 7/6. Strawberries: Captain Cook, 1/6 to 2/4% per chip: Marguerite, 1/ to 1/6. Oranges: South Australian, 21/ to 28/ per case; Jamaican, 28/0 to 32/. Lemons: Cured, 4/ to G/; others, 2/ to 3/. Grapefruit: New Zealand. 9/ to 12/6; Californian, 30/. Tomatoes: Island, originals, 10/ to 12/6; hothouse, 6d to 1/1 per lb. Bananas: 23/ to 33/ per case. Pines: Queensland, 14/ to 18/; Fiji, 10/ to 15/6 (repacks). Grapes: Californian, White, 24/; Red, 22/6; Black, 35/. Coconuts: 15/6 per sack. Paw paws: Fiji, 10/ to 22/ per large case. Vegetables. Good supplies of cabbage were available at prices about the same as last week. Cauliflowers were in short supply and prices were in advance of last week. New potatoes were in good supply, selling at Inst week's rates, and there was also a good supply of peas, and prices advanced for best quality. Pumpkins were scarce, realising high prices. All root vegetables were in keen demand and lettuce sold at very high prices, up to 11/ per case. The market showed a firming tendency all round. Quotations are:— Asparagus, 7d to iOd per bundle; beet, ; 1/6 to 2/3 per dozen; broad beans. 2Ud to 3d per lb; carrots, 1/ to 1/6 per dozen; cauliflowers, 5/6 to 10/ per sack; on benches, 2/ to 4/6 per dozen; cabbages, 2/ to 6/ per sack; on benches. 1/ to 2/3 petdozen: cucumbers, 3/ to 6/6 per dozen; French beans. 9d to 1/3 per lb; green ppas, 3d to sd; kumaras, Island, 17/ to 19/ per cwt; leeks, 2d to 3d per dozen; lettuce. 2/0 to 10/ per case; marrows, new season's, 4/ to 10/ per dozen; melons, 3d to 6d each; onions, Canadian, 16/6 to 17/ prr bng: potatoes, new. No. 1, 7/ to 9/3; No. 2, 3/0 to 6/6; pumpkins, 15/ to 21/ per ewt; parsnips, 1/3 to 1/9 per dozen; radish, 9d to 1/; rhubarb, 1/6 to 2/6; spinach, !>d to 9(1; spring onions, 4(1 to 1/2 per bundle; swedes. 4/ to 5/ per bag; turnips, 8d to 1/ per dozen. Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply ot poultry was heavy, an increased number of cockerels being offered. The prices paid showed a falling tendency. Selling rates were as follow: — Cockerels: Heavy breeds, prime, 3/ to 5/ each; not prime, 1/6 up; light breeds, prime, 2/3 to 4/; not prime, 9d up. Fat roosters: Heavy broods, prime, 2/ to 3/; light breeds. 1/6 to 2/. Fat hens: Heavy breeds, 2/6 to 3/6; light breeds, 1/6 to 2/0. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best, 3/ to 4/; smaller, 1/0 up; light breeds, best, 3/ to 4/; smaller, 1/0 up. Drakes: Young, prune, 2/6 to 3'3; smaller, 1/0 up; old, 1/0 to 2/3. Ducks: Young. 2/ to 3/;; old, 1/6 to 2/3. Geese: 3/ to 4/. Turkeys: liens, 4/6 to 6/; gobblers, 7/ to 14/. Cockerel chicks: Heavy breeds. Id to 1/6: light breeds, Id to 9d. I Day-old chicks: 8.C., OVid to 7VSd; L., O'/jd to VM. Guinea fowls: 3/6 to 4/6. Butter and Eggs. The price of eggs has remained unchanged .since the increase of Id per dozen earlier in the week.
