SWIMMING.

THE AUCKLAND CENTRE.

NEXT TUESDAY'S CARNIVAX.

MAYOR TO OPEN THE SEASON.

At a meeting yesterday of the management committee of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association advice was received from the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, president of the centre, that if in Auckland next Tuesday night ho would formally open the season at the combined carnival in the Tepid Baths. Office as vice-presidents was accepted by Messrs. D. Holderness and L. Coakley. Congratulations were extended to Mr. Holderness on his appointment as actingsuperintendent to the Auckland Harbour Board. , The North Shore Club was granted permission to hold a carnival in the Tepid Baths on December 17. The chairman, Mr. T. C. Hobbs-Jones, commended on the fact that clube, in arranging their programmes, did not provide for 100 yds races. In his opinion, in view of the fact that this was a recognised distance for the Auckland and New Zealand championships, clubs should be urged to encourage championship distances. Mr. Jones' remarks were supported by other members, and the committee resolved to suggest to the four clubs already granted permission to have carnivals that they give consideration to the question of altering short senior handicap races to a distance of 100 yds, and that, in future, they cater for longer distances. It was decided to call a conference of club secretaries at an early date. An opinion of the legal and by-laws sub-committee on the liability of defunct clubs for registration fees was submitted to a meeting of the management committee of the Auckland Swimming Centre yesterday. The centre had asked the subcommittee whether defunct clubs should pay theso feee. According to the rules of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, a fee of 1/ in respect of each senior member must be paid by a club. In the opinion of members of the legal and by-laws sub-committee, registration fees paid in respect of senior members set out in the club's annual return of members are paid in respect of the season following the annual meeting of the centre, not the season just closed. Clubs must pay to the centre during the season registration fees in respect of senior swimmers who join the club after that club, has furnished the centre with its _ annual returns, and has paid the registration fees calculated on the seniors disclosed in such returns. The rules of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association state that registration fees are due and payable prior to the date of the centre's annual meeting, and that members joining a club subsequent to the furnishing by this club of a list of members, and ail senior swimmers granted a transfer from one club to another, shall become immediately liable for payment of registration fees. Such registration fees shall at once be forwarded to the centre for transmission to the New Zealand Council.
