Miss Nieholls entered the semi-finals of tho women's singles, in which she will meet Miss Hartigan, owing to her meritorious win over Miss Hattersley, one of the State's best volleyers. The New Zealander was behind 2—4 in the deciding set, at which stage she' concentrated on deep sliced shots to Mies Hattersley s backhand. Miss Nicholls played entirely from the base-line and only her steadiness carried her through, as~ Miss Hattersley scored many points with volleys and smashes. Inability to hit winners at the net was responsible for the New Zealanders' defeat in the women's doubles. Mrs. Bette and Miss Menzies stormed the net at every opportunity. Henderso_n and Mrs. Harper, former Australian singles champion, were too solid for Huxley and Miss I. Poole, especially as Huxley was below his best form. After a match which had extended over more than three hours MeGrath forfeited to Hopman owing to indisposition.
