NAVY'S SERVICES.
HAWKE'S BAY EARTHQUAKE. PRESENTATION OF SHIP'S BELL. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) ' NiAPIER, this day. Services rendered by the Royal Navy on the occasion of the Hawke's Bay earthquake disaster nearly five years ago are to receive minor commemoration in a function which has been arranged for Thursday next, during the visit of the sloop Leith. The commander of the Leithj Captain 0. Bevir, will present to the Corporation of Napier the bell and plate from H.M.S. Veronica, which was berthed at West Quay, in the inner harbour at Napier, on February 3, 1931. The Veronica, which was slightly damaged by the upheaval and subsequently found her departure through the shallowed channel a delicate operation, landed ambulance parties, marines and naval ratings who did much to assist the stricken residents until the arrival on the morning of February 4 of the cruisers Dunedin and Diomede. Commander Morgan, of the later received the C.M.G. in recognition of his services. The presentation of the bell and plate from the shir- will be the fulfilment of an understanding made some time ago before the Veronica's departure for Home.
