A little boy who put out his tongue at Mr. Gladstone, 60 years ago, celebrated his 68th birthday in London recently. He is Professor Septimus Webbe, who entered his 50th year as a professor of music at the Royal Academy of Music. Master Webbe was giving his first public performance. He played by ear the overture to Zampa, standing at the piano in order to reach the keyboard. When the audience, with Mr. Gladstone as its principal member, applauded, the small boy put out his tongue. Gladstone was so amused that he picked the child up and kissed him. Professor Webbe made history when he played at the Stock Exchange in the tea hour. Liszt visited the Academy in 1886, heard young Webbe play his Concert Study in D Flat, and offered to take him as a pupil.
