LUCKY ESCAPE.
CAR HITS ALBANY BRIDGE. IRON STAY PREVENTS FALL. The driver and three passengers of a large touring car had a remarkable escape from serious injury this morning, when a tyre blew out and tho car crashed into the side of a bridge at Albany. Only an iron stay saved it from dropping on to the rocks 20ft below. The car was being driven northwards when a blowout occurred as it was approaching Day's Bridge. The car hit the side of the bridge, carrying away about 12ft of the handrail, and the car swung at right angles across the bridge, coming to a stop against an iron structure. The driver was cut about the head and face, and the passengers were severely shaken. The car, which was badly damaged, had to be dragged away, with all wheels locked. Traffic was held up for about half an hour. The bridge spans a small stream almost in Albany itself. It is at a very bad angle to the road, and was the scene of a fatal accident less than a year ago.
