The weather was favourable and the wicket perfect. The visitors' captain, Holmes, did not play owing to an injury to one of his hands. The new leg-before-wicket rule was used for the first time. Lyttelton won the toss for Marylebone and Smith and Parks opened the batting. They gave a sparkling display and tackled the bowling, which was not particularly hostile, from all angles. Twelve run came off the first over and Parks made 18 in the first 20 minutes. HardstatV and Human played a brilliant partnership. Human made 78 in 45 minutes. He hit nine fours.
