CHURCH JUBILEE.
HOLY TRINITY, TAURANGA,
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
TAURANGA, this day.
Thursday, November 14, marks" an important event in the history of Tauranga, as it is the GOth anniversary of the consecration of the Holy Trinity Church of England, by the Bishop of Waiapu, Dr. William Williams. Actually 1935 marks the centenary of Christian missionary effort in Tauranga. In 1935 the Rev. J. A. Wilson commenced work in Turanga, and with Archdeacon Brown established the first mission station. The old mission house is still well known to all local residents and to many people throughout New Zealand. The early work of the mission was mainly among the Maoris, services being held in the mission chapel, which has since been removed. With the development of the district the need for further church ministrations became apparent, and the present church was erected. The first vicar was the Rev. Canon Jordon, who was in charge of the parish for 40 years, and also took a prominent part in civic affairs. The next vicar was the Rev. E. T>. Bice, who was here from 1913 to 191 C. Mr. Rice, who also will be a preacher at the jubilee service on Sunday, November 17, was succeeded by Archdeacon Tuke, who was vicar until 1921. The Rev. E. A. McCutcheon followed, his place being taken in 1925 by the Rev. A. F. Hall, who remained till 1932, the present vicar, Rev. O. S. O. Gibson then taking charge. It is anticipated that a good number of old parishioners will be present for the jubilee celebrations.
