REFUSED HEARING.
MR. BURTON AT NEWMARKET. Addressing an audience that filled the .Municipal Hall at Newmarket last night, Mr. H. P. Burton, National Government candidate for Auckland East, was accorded a quiet and attentive hearing for • the first ten minutes only. After that there were frequent interjections and bursts of noise and jeering from members of the audience sympathetic with Labour.
The chairman, Mr. S. Donaldson, made an appeal to a section of the audience to "play the game." He
reminded them that at the meeting held by Mr. F. W. Schramm, the Labour candidate, Mr. Schramm had appealed to them to give every candidate a fair hearing.
When a man rose to move a vote of thanks he was counted out. A motion thanking Mr. Burton for his address and expressing appreciation of his personal qualities, but entire lack of faith in the policy he represented, was put to the meeting. There were loud cries for and against, and the chairman remarked, "I'm afraid the ayes have it."
