MANAWATU GORGE.
SLIP AG AIM BLOCKS LINE,
ALTERNATIVE ROUTE OPEN. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. The Manawatu Gorge road is again blocked by a large slip which came down late yesterday afternoon. It is unlikely that the road will be cleared before tomorrow. The scene of the latest landslide is just inside of the ralmerston North end of the gorge. The Gorge road is looked upon as being a dangerous thoroughfare at the present time as is instanced by the fact that a rock, estimated to weigh between seven and eight tons, fell from a hill on to the road on Wednesday night with such force that it not only cracked the concrete parapet under the bitumen, but also the concrete support pillar. Explosives had to be used to break the rock up before it could be removed.
The Pahiatua Track, an alternative route to Hawke's Bay, is able to carry average motor traffic.
