RACING AT RICCARTON

NEW ZEALAND CUP MEETING.

RECENT FORM OF CANDIDATES.

THEIR PERFORMANCES DISCUSSED.

The spring meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club will open at Riccarton to-morrow, and excellent fields are engaged throughout. The New Zealand Cup is the chief event, and Auckland has two representatives engaged—Kiltowyn and Caliente—but the latter was found to be suffering from the effects of poison yesterday and it is not known whether she will start. The Stewards' Handicap has, as usual, drawn a very smart field of sprinters, and backers are set a very hard task in selecting the winner. The betting will be win and place.

THE OPENING EVENT.

SPRENTCr BRUSH HURDLES.

The Spring Brush Hurdles, with which the meeting opens, lias drawn a field of mlevcn. Polydora is a winner over hurdles at the Grand National meeting and was successful over seven furlongs and a half at North Canterbury on Labour Day, so she is very fit. Rasouli has been placed three times this season, while Black Duke is one of the most consistent horses in the race, but he is getting on in years. He has "won this season and been placed on other occasions. Red Sun won two races at the Grand National meeting and also scored at Otaki, but failed at Ellerslie and Trentham. Arctic Star was a winner at the latter fixture, while Monastic was second in both his starts at Trentham. Joppa dead-heated for first at Geraldine with Trishna, while Invictus seems the best of the others. Some who may be fancied are POLYDORA MONASTIC ARCTIC STAR. The Spring Plate. The Spring Plate is a race run at special weights over a mile. Beau Gallante has done nothing for a good while, but Gold Cross won the Long beach Handicap, one mile, at Ashburton, the South Canterbury Champion Hack Handicap, one mile and 100 yards, at Geraldine, while he was second to Golden Dart over seven furlongs at the same fixture. Horn's Reef was successful in the Clarendon Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Dunedin, while Mount Val was second to A r alai'th over a mile at Trentham. The latter is also engaged and will not be without support. McHeath has been racing consistently in the south and won over a mile and a quarter at Rangiora on Labour Day. Lowenberg succeeded over seven furlongs at Trentham recently and is a good sort. Siiperex annexed the Kerrytown Handicap, one mile and 35 yards, at the recent South Canterbury meeting. Kotou was a good two-year-old, while Lady Graceful and Chidden, who was third at Rangiora, are not without prospects. The public may go for VALARTH GOLD CROSS LOWENBERG. Linwood Handicap. A very large field is engaged in the Linwood Handicap. Grand Review won the Fernside Handicap, seven furlongs and a half, at North Canterbury. Orris has not done a great deal since finishing second over six furlongs at the Grand National meeting. Land Raid beat Joyous and High Glee at Riccarton over six furlongs last August, but the lastnamed is stated to be sore, as is Moonbeam, who is also among the acceptors for this race. Riptide was second to Grand Review at Rangiora, while Mary Pratt occupied a similar position to Supercx at South Canterbury. Dollar Bill was a good performer last season, winning six races and four out of his last five starts. He recently ran second to Courtega at Masterton. Tail Light won over a mile at North Canterbury on Labour Day, while Invoice was placed at both Geraldine and South Canterbury. Top rank was second to Penelope at Banks Peninsula on Saturday and Half Note won the Avonhead Handicap at Riccarton, seven furlongs, last August; while of the others Merry Del Val and Disguise may be the best. Some who may have most ; friends are

TAIL LIGHT DOLLAR BILL LAND RAID. The Chief Event. Vintage, who is top-weight in the New Zealand Cup, has not raced since his return from Australia in the autumn, but he has been galloping well at Riccarton recently. Cuddle showed good form last season up to a mile and a half, being second to Vintage in the Wellington Cup. Though she failed at Trentham recently, she should do better at Riccarton. Kiltowyn has raced most consistently with big weights, and with 7.13 he should give a good account of himself. He was going well in the Auckland Cup when he got knocked about five ffirlongs from home. Steeton won the event last year, but has little to his credit since. Argentic has been showing a return to form recently and ran second to Tuirau at Banks Peninsula on Saturday. Fersen was second to Arctic King in the Wellington Handicap recently,, and his Taranaki supporters look to him to run a great race. Caliente, who won the Mitchelson Cup, tailed at Trentham, but has been suffering from soreness, and later was found to have been doped. Silver Sight and Guarantee may be suited by a shorter journey. Walton Park failed in the Cup last year and Kemal Pasha may be troubled by the distance. Tuirau has been racing consistently and won over a mile and a quarter at Banks Peninsula on Saturday. She is by Silverado, and her trainer is confident she will see out the distance. Tout le Monde is going well at Riccarton and sticks on. Sunee is by Australian Sun, who has sired some good stayers, including In the Shade. The latter ran second to Chide in 1929. Sunee has shown good staying ability up to a mile and three furlongs, and after his showing at Trentham appeals to be the pick of the lightweights. The chief fancies may be

KILTOWYN CUDDLE. TUIRAU. The Two-year-old Classic. The Welcome Stakes is for two-year-olds. "Wild Chase, Paper Slipper and Pelmet are nil winners, the lastnamed annexing the McLean Stakes at Duuedjn and the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham from a good field. Paper Slipper also won at Trentham and Wild Chase at Ashburton. Kow Tow, .Document and Dawning Light have been placed. The favourites may be PELMET PAPER SLIPPER KOW TOW. The Apprentices' Plate. A very useful field is carded for the Apprentices' Plate, and horses that have been showing good form recently are ({olden Dart. Rose Val, Treasure Hunt, Chaste, Latitude, Sky Rover, Sisterina, Tooley Street. Ayresleigh and Slasher. Most money may come for GOLDEN DART ROSE VAL CHASTE. The Stewards'. A classy field of sprinters figure in the .swards' Handicap and the issue is very .en. The top-weight, Silver Streak, won » double at Dunedin and was third to Bon '.'ray and Variant at Trentham. He should :o well to-morrow. Rebel Chief won the Flying Handicap at South Canterbury, but has bem sore recently. If started he will support. Emissary is speedy, but has

had no racing rocently. Fair Weather won a sprint event at the Wellington meeting and will liave to be considered. Cranford has been placed twice in this event previously and is not without prospects. Davolc and Knockfin are on the same mark, and of the pair Knockfin appeals most. He is a brilliant galloper and will be one of the chief fancies. Bon Tray won well at Trent, ham and should be in the money. Variant .reads better than Travenna, and on Wei lington running is a distinct possibility. Haut Monde is well in and one of the most likely to effect a surprise. Among the lightweights Viking who won both sprints at Gore, appeals most. Sta Fox, Tizzy, Trivet and Grey Honour are also likely to show up. The bulk of the money may come for KNOCKFIN BON TRAY VARIANT. Riccarton Handicap. Fracas, who heads the Riccarton Handicap. has no recent form, but was a good performer last season. Southdown and Heritage have the same weight, and of the pair Heritage will have most friends. He won 0 the Avondale Guineas like a good horse and his prospects look bright. Plate won at Ellerslie and should be in the money in this event. Quite Soon will be suited by the distance and is likely to get good support. Of the others Big Dook, Quietly, Golden King and Rompalong appeal most. The favourite selections may be HERITAGE PLATO QUITE SOON.
