NEW MOORING AREA.
WEST OF MECHANICS' BAY. The decision of the Auckland Harbour Board to allow yachts to moor in the area to the west of the vehicular ferry to Devonport will be appreciated by boat owners who have been unable to obtain sites in Mechanics' Bay, officially designated area A. The water is fairly deep off there and the moorings will not require to be laid far off shore. It will be almost immune from the everlasting smoke and smuts which are released in clouds from the railway sheds. The prevailing sou'-west wind will take them clear of this spot. Only in a sou'-easter will they trouble the lucky owners in the new area. There are two drawbacks, however, to this place. There i 6 no protecting wall on the sea side, as the Eastern tide deflector ae'us for Mechanics' Bay proper, and there arc no boatsheds for dinghy accommodation near. Some enterprising builder would do well with a boatslied on the waterfront. Or perhaps our leading yacht .cljb may in time secure a site there in addition to rooms in the city. It would be a good investment for future generations. Failing a site ashore, a jetty with accommodation on its outer end would be up-to-date. Its central position, right at the city's front door, is the best obtainable, being only five minutes' walk from Queen Street. The King's wharf gives splendid shelter from prevailing winds.
