DEPUTY-MAYOR'S DEATH.

MR. W. C. ELMS, OF NORTHCOTE

The death occurred at ten o'clock this morning, after a brief illness, of Mr. William Christopher Ellis, the deputyMayor of Northcote, aged 64 years. He had been a member of the Northcote Borough Council for the past eight years. He returned on Monday from a visit to his married daughter at Putaruru and was then apparently in good health. On Tuesday, however, he became ill.

Mr. Ellis was born at Mount Eden and was educated at the Grafton Road school. He was one of the fast-disap-pearing band associated with the old shipping days of the port. He worked for 31 years as shipping provider for Mr. R. S. Reynolds, in Little Queen Street, and on Mr. Reynolds' death took over the business, from which he retired 10 years ago. He waa well-known in yachting circles, being the owner of the launch Little Princess. He formerly owned the yachts Lorna and Scout. He had presided at annual meetings of the Northcote and Birkenhead regatta committee.

Mr. Ellis was a foundation member of the Auckland Pigeon Flying Club, of which he was secretary and treasurer for many years. He is survived by Mrs. Ellis, one son, Mr. Albert Langley Ellis, of Northcote, and a daughter, Mrs. M. St. J. Paxton, of Putaruru. There are five grandchildren. The flag was flown at half-mast over the Northcote Borough Council Chambers to-day. The funeral takes place on Saturday afternoon at the Birkenhead Cemetery.
