MR. E. S. BARTON.

After a lengthy illness Mr.' Edmund Simeon Barton, an old settler, has died at Whangarei. He was born at Reading, England, in 1854, being a son of the late Professor C. H. Barton, and came with his parents to Australia at an early age. He left his home at Bridgewater, Adelaide, when only 14 years of &ge and was employed on a cattle run in the Northern Territory for some years. Coming to New Zealand over 50 years ago, Mr. Barton was one of the original settlers when the Ballance block in the Wellington Province was taken up, and this holding he farmed successfully, mainly fattening cattle, for some years. Later ho acquired a property near Tariki, Taranaki, which farm he worked for some time. After retiring from active farming he used to winter in the South Sea Islands, latterly spending a considerable time at Whangarei Heads and Whangarei. Mr. Barton never married, but leaves three nephews in New Zealand, Messrs. Alfred and Harry Babbagc, of Hauturu, Kawlna, and Mr. Gordon Babbage, of Remuera, Auckland.
