CLASSIC CLUB.
LAST RECITAL OF SEASON. The Classic Club held its final recital for the season in tho Overseas League rooms on Tuesday, tho president, Dr. S. Kennetn Phillips, presiding. The chairman, in welcoming the members and guests, mentioned that there had been an increase in the membership of the club and that during the year 14 private recitals and a public concert had been presented. He also congratulated the committee on tho splendid work they had done during the year in managing the club's business.
An enjoyable programme of light music then followed, and was warmly appreciated by tho large audience. A bracket of classical English songs, "Where tho Bco Sucks" (Arne) and "Should He Upbraid" (Bishop), sung by Miss Julie Williams, opened the programme, and the same artist later sang "A Birthday" (Cowen) and "Blackbird's Song" (Scott). The next item was the operatic aria "La Donna e Mobile" (Verdi), sung by Mr. Henry Donaldson, who also sang a bracket of humorous old English folk songs, "Come, My Own One," "Yarmouth Fair" and "Tho Twelve Days of Christmas."
Among other items rendered were
"Wild Rose" and "Wandering" (Schubert), "Sunshine and Rain" (Blumenthal) and "Charming Cliloe" (German), sung by Miss Judith Glover; "Jenny Wren" (Rowley), "The Two Rats" (Watts), "Nursery Rhymes" (Curran) and "Milkmaid's Song" (Rowley) were sung by Miss Lillian Kennedy. Three gay English songs, "Cuckoo" (Martin Shaw), "A Rose Has Thorns" (Lloyd) and "If a Pig Wore a Wig" (Parratt), were rendered by Miss Dorothy Gordon, who also sang "Tho Vain Suit" (Brahms) and "I Have a Lover True" (Hugo Wolf).
The concluding section of the programme included pianoforte solos, "Gopak" (Moussorgsky), "Gavotte" (Gardiner) and "Humoreske" (Swinstead), played by Miss Lyndall Burley, and "Polonaise in A Flat" and "Prelude in A Flat" (Chopin), played by Mrs. Maud Lysaght. A bracket of whimsical songs, "When Childher. Plays" (Davies) and "The Fiddler of Dooney" (Dunhill), were sung by Mr. Arthur Thompson, and a humorous vocal duo, "When Shall We Be Married, John ?" sung by Miss Lillian Kennedy and Mr. Henry Donaldson.
